How Electrolysis Works

Electrolysis uses a fine, sterile probe to deliver a gentle electrical current into each hair follicle, disabling its ability to grow hair

Types of Electrolysis

  • Galvanic Electrolysis – Uses direct current to create a chemical reaction that destroys the follicle.
  • Thermolysis – Uses alternating current (heat) to destroy the follicle.
  • Blend Method – Combines galvanic and thermolysis for maximum effectiveness.

The Current Use of Electrolysis

  • Still the gold standard for permanent hair removal.
  • Essential in gender-affirming care, including pre-surgical preparation.
  • Recommended for medical cases like PCOS or hirsutism.
  • Chosen for cosmetic freedom: face, underarms, bikini, chest, and more.
  • Modern technology ensures greater comfort and precision.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines

  • Stop using retinoids, acids, or exfoliants 48 hours before treatment.
  • Avoid tanning or sunburn before your session.
  • Inform us of any history of cold sores/herpes

Post-Treatment Care

  • Expect mild redness or sensitivity (temporary).
  • Avoid makeup, harsh products, saunas, or hot tubs for 24–48 hours.
  • Do not touch or pick the treated area.
  • Apply a soothing moisturizer or aloe.

Electrolysis Post-Care Instructions

Introduction

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method of permanent hair removal. This treatment is safe, effective, and suitable for all skin types, but proper aftercare is essential to ensure optimal results and protect the skin while it heals. Following these post-treatment instructions will help minimize irritation, reduce the risk of complications, and promote faster recovery.

Immediate Aftercare (First 24 Hours)

  • The treated area may appear slightly red, swollen, or sensitive. This is a normal reaction and usually subsides within a few hours.
  • Keep the area clean and dry. Avoid touching the skin unnecessarily.
  • Apply a soothing gel such as pure aloe vera or witch hazel to calm the skin and reduce inflammation.
  • If you experience discomfort, you may use a cold compress (wrapped in a clean cloth). Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothing, hats, or headbands that may rub against the treated area.

Skincare Products to Avoid

For at least 48‒72 hours after treatment, do not apply skincare products that may irritate or sensitize the skin, including:

  • 14 days of Retinoids: tretinoin, retinol, retinoic acid
  • Exfoliating agents: glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, AHA/BHA products
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Vitamin C serums (ascorbic acid)
  • Astringents, toners with alcohol, or fragranced products
  • Any scrubs, peels, or mechanical exfoliators

Use only a gentle cleanser and a fragrance-free moisturizer as recommended by your provider.

Activities to Avoid

  • Do not touch, scratch, or pick at the treated area. This may cause scarring or infection.
  • Avoid makeup, deodorant, self-tanner, or perfumed lotions on the treated area for at least 24 hours.
  • Do not expose the skin to heat: hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, or tanning beds should be avoided for 48 hours.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, sweating, or activities that increase body temperature for 24‒48 hours.
  • Do not wax, tweeze, or thread hairs between sessions. Shaving is permitted if needed, but electrolysis works best when hair is left intact for your scheduled treatments.

Sun Protection

Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun after electrolysis. To prevent hyperpigmentation:

  • Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30+ with zinc oxide on exposed areas.
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours if outdoors.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat or protective clothing.
  • Avoid intentional sun exposure for at least 1 week after treatment.

Healing Expectations

  • Redness, swelling, and minor tenderness are common and usually resolve within a few hours to 1‒2 days.
  • Tiny scabs or pinpoint crusts may appear. Do not pick at them̶they are part of the natural healing process and will fall off on their own.
  • In some cases, small white pustules may form. This is temporary and should clear quickly.
  • Change your pillowcase the night of your treatment and wear clean, loose-fitting clothing to reduce irritation.

Long-Term Care & Results

  • Consistency is key. Multiple sessions are required because hair grows in cycles.
  • Following proper post-care ensures better results, reduces the risk of pigmentation, and keeps your skin healthy throughout the process.
  • If you have any unusual reaction (such as prolonged swelling, pain, or signs of infection), please contact us immediately.

At Derma Advanced, your safety, confidence, and comfort are our priority. With the right care, electrolysis will bring you smooth, healthy, hair-free skin̶permanently.
